Mike Pence Announces U.S., Turkey Agree to Cease-Fire in Syria

Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Thursday in Ankara, Turkey, that the U.S. and Turkey had agreed to an immediate cease-fire in Syria that would allow Kurdish forces to withdraw from the border.
Pence added that the cease-fire meant that the U.S. would not place further economic sanctions on Turkey, and that it would remove existing sanctions once the cease-fire was implemented.

President Trump, hailing the agreement in advance, called it “great news” and said “millions of lives” would be saved:

Under the terms of the agreement, Turkey would allow the U.S.-backed Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) to withdraw from a “safe zone” near the Turkey-Syria border, thus removing one of the main causes for which Turkey had invaded northern Syria last week.

Pence thanked those around the world who had prayed for peace in the region. He also praised the “candor and frankness that President Trump applied to this” (a candor that Trump’s critics had often mocked throughout).

He reiterated that the agreement provided for “withdrawal of YPG from the affected areas in the safe zone, and once that is completed, Turkey has agreed to a permanent cease-fire, and the U.S. has agreed to work with Turkey, and to work with nations around the world, to ensure that there is peace and stability.”

US and Turkey reach agreement to suspend military operation in Syria

Halt in fighting within five days would allow Kurdish fighters to withdraw beyond a designated safe zone

US Vice President Mike Pence and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have reached a deal to suspend Ankara’s operation in northern Syria within 120 hours to allow Kurdish forces to withdraw from a designated safe zone, a Turkish official told Middle East Eye.

Following a long meeting between Turkish and American top officials on Thursday, the two sides came to an agreement amid growing international and US opposition to the Turkish incursion in Syria.

Pence confirmed the agreement after the meeting on Thursday.

“Today the United States and Turkey have agreed to a ceasefire in Syria,” he said.

The demarcation line of the safe zone would run roughly 20 miles south of the Turkish border, Pence said.

Trump welcomed the agreement on Thursday, writing on Twitter: “Great news out of Turkey… Millions of lives will be saved.”

The safe zone would be primarily enforced by the Turkish military, and the two sides will increase their cooperation to implement the deal.

Turkey will take maximum care not to harm civilians in the safe zone, the official added.

Once the military operation stops, Trump will lift the sanctions that he imposed on Turkey earlier this week. MEE understands that the White House will work with Congress to prevent further sanctions by US legislators.

The agreement also stipulates that Kurdish militants, including the People’s Protection Units (YPG), would have their heavy weapons collected and their fortifications and fighting positions disabled.

“We got exactly what we wanted out of the meeting,” a senior Turkish official told MEE.

The Turkish operation, dubbed Peace Spring, will be completely suspended once the YPG completes its withdrawal, Pence said.

He added that Ankara would commit to a “permanent ceasefire” when the agreement is fully implemented.
